Careful as some products are more harmful than they are helpful.

A trick I've used with good success is one part Woolite and 2 parts warm water in a spray bottle. Spray on liberally and use a carpet brush. Also careful on how hard you scrub as it will remove carpet fibers. Wet vac it after it sits. Or pat it down with a towel.

Another chance is a steam cleaner again using the same solution.
