Would "harsh criticism" have been more appropriate than "attack"? Seems like semantics to me but by all means proceed with the outrage or should I say harsh criticism.

Actually neither is appropriate in this case since all Trump said was Lewis should pay more attention to his own district, but that's beside the point.

The thread is about the NY Times and their one-sided coverage of the story. Lewis calls the president-elect an illegitimate president and the NY Times does not take Lewis to task for his words. Trumps tells Lewis to do his job, and the NY Times labels Trumps comment as an "attack".

That's the point.
