Countries regain their sovereignty from un-elected bureaucrats and they can then act in their own best interests and do things that work best for them.
They can do that by changing the EU's "rules." It doesn't take a dissolution of the EU to accomplish that.

I guess I should have been more specific: how is it beneficial to the USA if the EU breaks up?

I'll be honest, I like to vacation, and I like to vacation in Italy. No EU = no euro = cheaper trip to Italy.

Additionally, defense wise you could make an argument that NATO would be stronger if that was the only tie that binds between nations. It could go the other way as well, but at least GDP to defense spending ratios wouldn't be so uniformly affected by the weak Euro.

They have the Euro now and plenty of EU bureaucracy. They fail to contribute adequately to their own defense. Would breaking up the EU change things? Perhaps, but it couldn't really hurt.
