Became free in 2016, IIRC.
As far as your renewal:
1. Yes, you'll have to take a class. The class, by law, will include classroom time and range time.
2. There are some instructors out there who really cut corners on the length of the class. And there are a quite a few teaching really stupid stuff regarding Louisiana laws -- stuff that'll get you killed or tossed into prison.
The foregoing may sound overly harsh, but it's factual. You need to avoid these people. They aren't teaching stupid stuff on purpose. They think what they're teaching is correct.
There are plenty of knowledgeable, experienced instructors out there, but there are a number of well-intentioned people whose credentials consist of little more than having attended a 1.5-2 day NRA class. Some are really inexperienced, having never taught more than a dozen people in their lives.
Remember: you're not taking a class to learn how to shoot -- you're really there to get a solid refresher on Louisiana's "use of deadly force" statutes so you'll know when private citizens are allow (and are not allowed) to use deadly force.
3.You need to hurry up and take a class if your expiration date is next month. And you need to be sure to submit your application online. LINK
4. Do some "homework" before picking a class. I know tyhis iss hard to do if you're really in a hurry to schedule one. Call me (225-766-4422) and I'll be glad to recommend a couple of instructors in the BR area that I know personally. They won't teach you anything stupid. [I won't be recommending my class because (a) my classes stay full, (b) I wouldn't feel right about advertising on this board, and (c) I might be one of those inexperienced instructors I mentioned. ]

I'm not due until February of next year, but I still may give you a holler to get a head start. I only asked about the class time because IIRC, there were a few people that only came sit in half the day. Figured they may have been in for the refresher. I appreciate it
