I've been to some of the exact same places by myself and with family at different times. Hawaii, Washington D.C., San Francisco, New Orleans, Miami, and St. Louis are a few examples.
I like the National Parks and Washington D.C. recommendations, but really pretty much anything outside a purely family oriented venue is going to be good; we're eclectic as a society so you can feel at home solo just about anywhere.
Just think of it as a way to supplement your family trips and what I usually do is try and do things that I like to do but would not get to do if it was a family trip. I usually do a lot of walking or biking that I'm not going to do if it was a family vacation. Or engage in an activity like fishing which I'm not going to get to do on a family trip. Basically enjoy the freedom you have to decide to do what it is you want to do and believe me people aren't going to pay much attention as to why you are traveling alone: There will be many people traveling who will be just like you.
The main thing I've noticed when traveling alone is I'll go on the cheap and eat cheap and stay at cheap places that I'd never do with family. That way you can save your money to explore the sites and spend it on other things relating to your trip.
