When do you consider a QB has "won" a SB?

Does a QB (or any player for that matter) get credit for winning a super bowl simply if they get a ring, or must they play in the actual game for HOF, GOAT, etc. disputes?
Example: Say a QB plays every game and gets hurt in the NFC/AFC championship and his team goes on to win the SB. He gets a ring sure, but does he get credit for "winning" a SB?

Former NFL quarterback Steve Young has a total of three Super Bowl rings. He was awarded two of the rings as the backup quarterback in Super Bowls XXIII and XXIV. He earned the third ring as the starting quarterback in Super Bowl XXIX.

Phil Simms basically did that and doesn't get credit for winning two Super Bowls.
