I think what Stoops was saying is that the environment has changed since 2014. In 2014 it was acceptable to punish a player for an incident like that by suspending him for a year. Post Ray Rice the only acceptable thing is dismissal.

I'm honestly torn on this. The kid obviously did a bad thing, what I don't know is has he redeemed himself? Is he now a model student and teammate who gives back to the community? If he is then I would say that is a good redemption story that many people can learn from. Much better than throwing him out the door and nothing good coming out of the situation.

If I was Stoops I wouldn't have sat him for a single play this game. Just because the video came out now doesn't mean any new punishment is warranted. It only makes you look weak. I would have stuck to my guns and said the player has been punished already.

He could be a damn saint now for all we know. It doesn't matter. That exact school has kicked out students for less. He was able to stay because of how good of a football player he is.
