Is it time to re-do Boxing's weight classes?

Most of the weight classes were created almost a century ago, when people were much smaller (height and weight). The average US male weighs 195.5lbs, according to the CDC. Now most people are overweight, but if you compare that to the boxing weight classes it would still skew very awkwardly.
Even if you drop 25lbs off the average weight, that would still leave an overwhelming majority of men in only two weight classes. While leaving that small minority 14 other weight classes. How does that represent modern culture? Or how much guys can or should weigh. Honestly, I have only ever met a handful of guys that weigh under 150lbs and they were all very short.
Wouldn't it make more sense if they eliminated or combined a lot of those lower classes and introduced more above 200? I just have never understood why there were so many. Even if they copied the UFC weight classes, that would be a big improvement..

I agree with this thread
Get rid of the Super and Junior do ions and do it like the UFC does, would make for better matchups

Rousey is 5'7" and a Lightweight under this male classification.

Great thread. They also need to get the gorverning bodies together and make some sense of that. Too many belts out there to keep track of. Should only be one champ in each division.

I don't mind the different governing bodies, except when they are openly corrupt. It was kind of cool when you would have two champions fighting to unify the titles. The should be much more oversight though and accountability. I like that the fighters are independent and don't have a boss they have to impress or appease..

Yeah. They fight at catchweights a lot anyway. They should cut the number of weight classes in half. Get rid of Cruiserweight biggest that division's been a bust. I can't remember a single great Cruiserweight fight. Holyfield had some pretty good ones in the early '90s.
