yep. one of my sisters works in a U of California campus where there is a high end medical school and many medical science opportunities. She makes big bucks, BS/RN.
Does she work in research?

Nursing is my third career. As others said. Don't do for money. It's a decent living and I love my job. But I don't love everything about my job.
You get out of something what you put into it. RN school is a bitch. Not that hard in retrospect but they will make you jump through lots of hoops. Some good instructors I've seen through the years but a lot of crappy ones who just didn't want to be at the bedside anymore.
Many places to work and different environments to work means you have to go find what you want to do and the level/type of bullshite you can tolerate.
What interests you and what you despise. Lots of different kinds of nursing to do . Are you a thrill junky? Then ER might be for you? If blood doesn't bother you but actual patient care kinda does, then OR may be for you. Etc etc etc. single and free, you could go trav nursing. Just don't do it for the money. You'll be disappointed and job burnout will come quickly.
