My guess is this is just bad psychology. People rather distract themselves externally than truly deal with the internal.
Good luck to them, may just need some tough love. Maybe a bootcamp would help, build up some confidence or something.

Her parents have tried EVERYTHING including tough love at high personal financial cost.
They're to the point where everyone has run out of ideas - hence the service dog.
