I mean, we kind of are due to Nixon, but he's free to change it if he wishes.

I disagree. Our current relationship with China I feel has created world stability to where almost all of us are truly united. I can instantly communicate from someone in Xinjiang all thanks to our cooperation. Hope that continues.

So Clinton was going to agitate Russia and Trump is going to agitate China. Guess we had to choose one or the other one day.

I mean, that's basically telling PRC either their government is illegitimate or they have illegitimate claims over Taiwan. There is a reason they are so touchy over this issue. Hell, last time The president of ROC spoke at the US (his alma mater Cornell), PRC started testing middles 60 kilometers off the coast of Taiwan.

One of my favorite Norm jokes from Weekend Update:
"American President Bill Clinton and Russian President Boris Yeltsin met to discuss the sensitive topic of NATO expansion. President Yeltsin stood firm saying that he must do what is right for Russia, while President Clinton also stood firm saying that he must do what is right for China."

it seems odd that the same people cheerleading our newfound peace with Russia are all for being antagonistic towards China.
Also interesting that Russia is antagonistic to China.
I'd rather work more closely with China than Russia.

No

China has a stronger economy, more potential for growth, and has the chance with increased wealth to move away from an authoritarian state. Russia has increased its authoritarianism, has become more closely aligned with Iran, and is opposed to the US geopolitically (not to say that China isn't as well). I'd rather work with China.

Well we have been working with China and it seems that means corporate espionage, infringing on our American made products, currency manipulation et all.

What makes you think the Russians will play fairly? Hint: they won't.

But Chinese economic policy is having more of a negative effect on the American economy than Russian economic policy is. I don't mind Trump ratcheting up leverage to get China to level the playing field, but there will be some bumps and bruises along the way while he forces/finds a new equilibrium with the Chinese.
I still think China retaliates by letting North Korea more off the leash. Don't be surprised to see more overt provocation from Lil Kim due to tacit Chinese approval of such as layback for Trump tightening the screws on them. China can't afford a direct confrontation with the US, so they'll use their best proxy.

I'm not denying that at all. I don't even think I insinuated that. I understand the point of his statement is an attempt to reframe US-Sino relations in order to gain the upper-hand. I'd still rather work with the Chinese, a country we've worked rather hard to liberalize, and by and large, have succeeded in doing so.

I disagree. I don't think NK will do more than their usual saber-rattling. The key area will be the South China Sea.

We've worked well with them when we were the clear hegemonic power and they were simply trying to get their shite in order. However, they've entered a new phase of trying to project power and become a hegemon in their own right, so we will be more directly opposed to them than we have been in the past.

SCS leaves then more open for direct confrontation with the United States. I don't think they want any part of directly firing on uS warships or vice versa.
They'll continue to push expansion in the SCS, but Lil Kim is going to be their punitive response to Trump rocking the globalism boat.
