It's really not true though the middle east was extremely westernized and very modern and progressive until the US decided it was time to overthrow the government they'd established

Nah. In 1958 or so, the sand people decided they could run the BP refineries and killed or ran off teh westerners. 18 months later they damn near begged the oil companies to return after they ran it into the ground as a pile of rust.
