Yea, my concern is over at 450 miles on less than $20 worth of gas
thats a great deal.
personally I would go with a small diesel hatchback over a prius if I was wanted the maximum MPG out of my car. something like a vw polo. gets 75 mpg

Polo isn't sold in the U.S.
Prius averages around 50 mpg on gas that is (at least where I live) around 15% cheaper than diesel. That means that you would need to get an average of about 57.5 mpg on the diesel for comparable fuel costs. Try to find a new model diesel sold in the US that averages above 57 mpg and will hold 5 passengers for less than $30k.
Batteries aren't dying on the Prius like people thought they would, and they continue to sell very well. If you are a commuter, you can drive it pretty cheaply and still have some value in it when you are ready to sell.
