Before the Wall St. like panic of 1990's basketball, where everyone was freaking out about missing on talent, looking overseas, starting to look to high school, etc...
There was like one guy who had jumped from high school to the NBA...Moses Malone...and he didn't go straight to the NBA. He was drafted by the fledgling ABA because he would be cheap and probably partly as a publicity stunt.
Malone didn't get to the NBA until two years later.
It didn't matter how good you were. The NBA didn't draft high schoolers as a fact. Until the panic and widening net of the NBA's search for talent in the 1990's - then it became acceptable to draft outside of college.
And btw, the Celtic drafted Bird as a junior even though they knew he was going to play college ball as a senior (Bird only played 3 years in college, he was a transfer.)
