I don't know what alternative universe you are referring to as having Saban a hot commodity. Fact is he was Michigan State's coach; his Michigan State team lost to Gerry DiNardo's LSU team in the Indy Bowl. Far from a hot commodity, he was a mid-level coach at a mid-level school back then. Unknown and uncertain. The fan base was predictably mixed on that hire. He came to LSU and did some good stuff - including the shared MNC with USC. He stressed excellence. He lost some big little games along the way. But Nick Saban did not become "THE NICK SABAN" until he left LSU, went to the NFL, and finally went to Alabama.
