An actual search was done. It was honed down to roughly 8 to 10. From there, it went down to 3, then 2, then 1.

In vetting folks, you not only want a successful coach, but that person has to be a good fit with your program, school, and administration.

6 to 8 folks worked the vetting process with the assistance of a number of others. I think they did the best they could.

We formally interviewed O and gave him a chance to present his binder. Who else did we formally interview? Fleck? Fedora? Scott Frost? Anyone?

eta: I'm pretty ignorant about Alluvia's search efforts, but it seems that personally meeting with other candidates (as opposed to their agents) would have been a good way to identify the best candidate.
