Why would SC, who knew him better than anyone, let him walk after the 2013 season?

After his interim head coach stint, SC wanted to retain him as an assistant. He was being paid well for an assistant - $650,000 I think- but was too proud or too pissed to go back to his old position.

I think USC was to proud to even consider making him the head coach. There was a lot of the same media and player sentiment to keep him. The job he did a USC was more impressive than LSU, that USC team was a dumpster fire when he took over.
