Same reason cane farmers are burning now. It adds all kind of nutrients to the ground. In forests, it is Mother Nature's way of killing pests too (beetles and bugs that do damage to trees).

Sure, but when the majority of these fires are due to arson, it is not exactly Mother Nature doing her thing.
