Because not everyone is a democrat or republican and they vote for who they think is the best candidate. Vitter was a horrible candidate and Edwards ran as a moderate(even though I never believed he was) which won him the election.

My question is: Where has Edwards been since the flood? I haven't heard or seen him since...
