Greg Gard has talked at length about his players and social issues. This isn't the first time Nigel Hayes has spoken-out about race relations. In particular, at UW-Madison, it has been a controversial subject over the last year or two.

Bronson Koenig is Native-American and has gone to North Dakota to protest the pipeline. He is looked-up to in that community.

Nigel Hayes has been using his platform as the university's most well-known African-American to bring about discourse of race-relations on both a university and national level.

I disagree that it will be a distraction, especially given the Chancellor and Athletic Director's response to dozens of Wisconsin student-athletes tweeting this message.
