I served, not a squid or SF, just regular GI. Luckily, I never saw action. I like to think if I saw action I would have risen to the test, as I was full of piss and vinegar at the time, but then again I may have frozen up. I'll never know, but I like to think I would have been tuff in combat.
If half of what the books and movies portrayed are correct how could you think they are anything but hero's. They put it on the line and survived what was thrown at them. Is some of it sensationalized? Probably. But would it be a great story if the Lone Survivor was the only guy from a Seal Team to make it out after fighting a group of 8 goat herders?
In every conflict we need hero's to rally around and ML was one of those guys to rally around. Yes, a lot of people don't talk about what they went through (AKA un-sung hero's) but we need hero's (true or made up in portions) to rally the men around.
I have much respect for them and thank them for their service and being someone for the enlisted to rally around.

More like about 200 hardened Taliban terrorists.
And don't forget the 16 (iirc) who died when these animals shot down their chopper with an rpg. That's another 16 heroes.
