I've only truly needed 4x4 a few times. Most of the time I've used it to minimize damage to property and to pull someone else out. With that said, I usually pay a few thousand more for it and will continue to do so, as I feel I get most of it back on resale.
In your case of 10k difference, I would go 2x4 unless I just knew I needed it. Save the 10k, buy a good tow strap and offer someone $100 to pull you out.

when I had mine I used it every hunting season all season...off hunting season it probably got used a couple of times a year usually at a dirt launch site or to pull somebody out of a hole of some sort...

Part of me wanted to try to find a car and a beater truck but with kids that I hope to take to do stuff in the truck with, having to deal with maintenance on 2 vehicles and finding a good used 4x4 crew cab within budget, I didn't go that route. If passengers aren't a big concern, maybe that would be a good option.
