There a link to this somewhere? Would love to read the backstory. The only thing I've read is that he thought they were sandhill cranes (still would've been illegal where he was hunting) but his lawyer told him to say he thought they were snow geese since those were legal at the time.

There's a link in the first few posts to a news article. Apparently he had gone hunting with some guys shortly before shooting the cranes and one of the guys he hunted with explained to him why he shouldn't shoot cranes in the area because of the WCs that were there. According to the story he told the guy that he would shoot them anyway.
