The added fuel milage will not offset the extra upfront cost of the diesel engine and the additional operating expense of a diesel---oil changes, urea, ect. PLUS most of the times these days diesel cost more than gas.
The torque of the small diesel does not offset the horsepower of a gas in the 5.7 liter range if pulling a trailer is your concern.
The best truck reliability wise on the road today is a Toyota.

If he can get a Big Horn 4x4 with the ecodiesel and 8 speed for $35k, then the dealer has already eaten the upfront cost of that motor. So that's a non-issue IMO.
Biggest reason to talk you out of it is that you're upside down on your current vehicle. The truck is fine - the current Ram has been around virtually unchanged since 2013, technically since 2009 excluding the 2013 update. Driveline is proven as well.

oil changes are 150 instead of 80 due to having to change the filter everytime. Besides that, the maintenance isnt all that much more. And on top of it, diesel is the same as gas right now, and you're getting twice the fuel mileage. If you don't plan on modifying it, get the extended warranty.
