the fish ring is best for smaller fish but back in the day for large ajs grouper lemons etc we also had a large treble hook (like they throw on swamp people to hook alligators), lower the hook on a rope drag the fish over hook, pull up the hook and snag the fish, it might take a couple of tries but it works
