Well traveling for work I always made sure to google the hip neighborhoods where locals congregate. Considering I end with a bunch of down time I usually avg 2 (try to make them unique type) museums per city. So I'll usually do dive bars, museums, hot restaurants. I'll study over google maps and get a good lay of the land and utilize a city's public transportation along with uber.

And for the most part in a week i get a good idea of the feeling of a city considering I'm actually interested in urban centers, the demography and anthropology and why the place is even set where it is.

Over all I found Nashville to be lacking. There is some neat neighborhoods but they don't have as much flavor as they would like
to think they do and some aren't as accessible a and walkable as they would like to think. I also found a lot of the people I met repping Nash didn't even live in Nash.

I don't know. I will agree with the other thread that Nashville may be a lot like Austin but in one way, it's overrated. Not that they aren't cool places, it's just that many people put them way too high on a pedestal making them overrated by definition.

They really aren't. It certainly isn't a walkable city. It's tons of little "pockets" of neighborhoods and bars, restaurants, and shopping. A lot of the neighborhoods are brand new or are newly transforming. They lack a certain authenticity that you find in a lot of other cities imo.

Man, that's the truth. A lot of people live in Brentwood, Franklin, Old Hickory, Madison, Hendersonville, Gallatin, Mt. Juliet, Antioch, etc... Typically, I just "drop" Nashville and refer to it as Middle Tennessee.

I respect that you put that much work into your visit instead of hitting broadway and calling it overrated (it is) like many do. You're definitely right on about walkability and public transpo. Severely lacking. I run into the same things you did and I live here - you meet all these people but NONE of them seem to actually live here. And if they do, they are transient. People in town trying to make it in the business and fizzle out and leave. It's hard to meet people actually rooted here. I don't tout Nashville as the end all be all, even when it comes to culture, but the town itself is great. I work in Brentwood and live in South Nash so the only times I ever need that aspect is the weekends and I can typically find something to do in an area I enjoy and that's enough for me. Coupled with the fact I'm the biggest country music fan I know - Nash is a great place for me
