I say No. It is better to be overly cautious when it is your young son. If you do decide to let him walk alone he should at least have a handgun on him even if it is just a 9mm with some hardcast bullets.

Just remember if you are walking in the woods and you see the same bear twice, at different times, it is not an accident. The bear is stalking you and you better keep your guard up.
