"Too many people have died," McCrory said. "Be careful — do not put other people's lives in danger."

More than 1,500 people were stranded Monday in Lumberton by flooding. Helicopter crews plucked people from rooftops and rescue boats helped the stranded find safety. Rescues were expected to continue Tuesday, AP reports.

Initially, the governor said the flooding in Lumberton was heightened by a suspected levee breach. However, the National Weather Service said later in the day that there had been no breach.

According to government officials, North Carolina has had more than 2,000 water rescues. Some 200 people were rescued from a flooded neighborhood in the Edgecombe County town of Pinetops. Another 70 were rescued from two hotels in Brunswick County, according to AP.

“North Carolina is resilient, our people are strong and we are going to get through this together,” McCrory said. “This storm is still impacting people in a big way. You have got to see it to believe all the devastation that has occurred.”

This makes you wonder how many more people could have died during the floods this summer if so many locals didn't have boats to help each other.

Federal and state governments do not have resources to rescue people in situations like this.

Thank God for the Cajun Navy. Let's hope they don't stop these people from helping in LA, it's our only lifeline.

You damn well know Barack or Hillary have no worries.

I was going in neighborhoods with buddies in our boats and there wasn't a first responder or government personnel in sight.

In not downing them cause i know they had their hands full. There were just too many neighborhoods to cover and not enough people to do it.

When that many folks are stranded, it takes 1000s of people to pull it together

I was happy to help out.
