Yeah, no. American IPA's have a fairly long history in the US.

I insulted the IPA. I've upset the pretentious masses. How dare me. It also runs me wrong because I have a couple of "IPA only" acquaintances that are bammers and like jam bands. Jam bands are also overrated and Buck FAMA
