I appreciate all the responses. Gives me plenty to think about. My kid is almost 5, and I thought now would be a good time to start instilling confidence beyond what I already do at home. While I like the thought of boxing, I'm thinking of something more like break glass in the event of an emergency, rather than full contact at this age.

It wont take you long to see if its a horse and pony show or the real deal. I was in a bad part of my life and used it for a hour of bar time. If I would have been sober we would have parted ways and went elsewhere.

My son is 10. HAs been involved in TKD for 5 years. He loves it.

This year his soccer practices switched night s and conflicted with TKD. He was crying trying to figure out how to keep up with both. He did not want to fall behind his friends in either one.

Luckily his instructors in both are willing to work with him.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING is to find an instructor who is GOOD WITH KIDS. They need to be firm but also delicate. Not enough discipline is as bad as too much. Most teachers teach variants of several martial arts.

We are happy with where we are. Good luck.
