I don't understand what your criteria is? Seems like you are ranking them in order of what you like the most.

If length, intensity, originality, and improvisation are being factored in to critique jamming then JRAD and the Biscuits are at the top of that list and it's not even close.

To me, there are only 4 legit jam bands. The rest are a bunch of wankers.

1. Grateful Dead
2. Allman Brothers
3. Phish
4. Widespread Panic

2. Allman Bros

The Allman Brothers should never be relegated to the label of "jam band".

They had 13 singles reach the Billboard charts, and "Ramblin Man" climbed all the way to #2. Six of their albums went gold, and three went platinum.

They are one of the most musically diverse acts of the late '60s and early '70s. There is so much more to them then just "jamming".

Hell, Led Zeppelin would jam too during live shows. But no one would ever refer to Led Zeppelin simply as a jam band, because they had legitimate hits. The same should be said for the Allman Brothers Band.

I offer Deep Purple from 1969-1971 using the same rationale. And I would put their musicianship and improvisation up against any band mentioned in this thread.

The Who Tommy tour(1969-70) with the same rationale pertaining to their jams.

As much as I love The Band, them being a jam band is news to me. That said, they still jam more impressively than WSP.

I remember going to see Deep Purple in '02 with some friends, and on the way there, one of 'em popped in a bootleg from the period you'd mentioned. I was like "holy shite, is this the same band?", lol....this one ambient jam in particular went WAY out there, and probably lasted for 1/4 of the car ride
