Have shot an SR9 at range. Very fond of it. One I shot was smooth and quite accurate. Recoil easy to manage. Sight picture clear

Excellent handgun.
I did a very detailed review/comparison of the compact version on YouTube. Your main differences will be length of grip, length of slide/barrel, and single vs double recoil spring. But the controls and handling characteristics will be the same.

Start at $350 - no more than $400. You can buy a new in box one for less than $450.
Also, make sure the magazine button isn't the round one. Those are the older, first run models with crappy triggers. If it is the older model, give him $300, and buy the trigger upgrade for $50 online.
What you really want is the newer model with the "D" shaped mag release. Those have a much smoother trigger.
