Originally Les Alexander tried to buy the Edmonton Oilers and move the team to Houston (thus bringing back the Houston Oilers though under a different sport), but at the last minute a group of Edmonton local investors (with NHL support) bought them. (Maybe your suggestion of the football Oiler color change would have happened.)
It would have been great for the Dallas Stars, who have no real rivals (Chicago is the closest they have to a rival, and that only because way back in the 70's the Dallas Black Hawks were their CHL franchise) and a weak fan base (games sell out but over half the crowd supports the opponents).
