I never understood the negative aspect of buying temporary "friends" that some posters like to bring up every time one of these threads are started. I lived the fraternity life. I'm several years removed from college, and yet a solid 30 of us have never lost touch with each other and still get together on a regular basis with our wives/girlfriends.

Coming from a small town and being a naturally introverted person, I knew I was going to need some help meeting people or I was going to sit in my dorm room for four years. Being in a fraternity helped me break out of my shell. It wasn't perfect, not everybody becomes best buds for life, and if you have 80-100 people all in one place, you're not going to get along with some of them. That's a fact, all the bs rhetoric about brotherhood notwithstanding. But, like you say, I made a core group of lifelong friends.
