He doesn't need to take hits, but he needs to be doing drills/workouts as soon as he can.

You know how it feels when you do leg day 2x a week for months, you barely notice it day to day.
Take 3 weeks off and get back in the gym and you will take a full week to recover from your workout. And while you won't lose much max strength you won't be hitting that high weight for as many sets. Same applies to every motion he will make running in a game.

The longer he "rests" the longer it will take for his body to be able to perform at maximum capacity for the full duration of a game, and the longer it will take him to recover between games.
If he's still injured though nothing you can do but stay off it. That's the question though, how bad is his ankle. how much actual "rest" vs just how much non contact rest is it causing him to receive
