Wow I am in an eerily similar situation as you. Please update the thread with how this turns out.

I reviewed the status of my grandfather's claim online last night and just spoke on the phone with a FEMA rep to confirm. He has been approved and a check has already been mailed for the maximum amount: $33,000.00. ($26,389.84 for real property, $4,498.16 for personal property and $2,112.00 for rental assistance). He is ineligible for moving/storage expenses because his losses exceed program limits.

I don't know how they determine who gets what but my pawpaw is 94 and his only income is social security and a BASF pension. He initially told me his house was 2600 sq ft which I knew sounded low and my husband confirmed last night that it is closer to 3600 sq ft. FEMA marked his water level at 1 foot 8 inches. He did not have flood insurance because he did not live in a flood zone. Hope this gives you some hope. Not that $33,000.00 even begins to monetarily cover what he lost.

Now onto tackling his State Farm homeowners claim for the caved in roof and the valuables that were stolen by looters before we could return. Of note, they didn't just take tv's and other property but also his unused checks and some bank info so I have had to freeze all accounts.
