To me it seems having an elite defense is more reliable. Defense travels and has a lesser drop off in inclement weather. If you have an elite defense then you have a shot in every game. Offense is a lot about timing which can easily be thrown off in certain situations.

This is actually the correct reason that the answer is defense.
If the D plays with intensity, they'll perform every game. And they can force turnovers which can change the game.
Offenses are more risky - fumbles, interceptions, if the QB gets dinged then the entire offense is changed, weather, wind, just the QB having an off day, etc.
So defense is more reliable, and that's why I'd prefer it.

Agreed. A road game doesnt really effect an elite defense while ans elite offense can be effected by playing a road game. We have seen it happen time and time again in Tiger Stadium
