There's also a theory that most of the apocalyptic aspects of the New Testament were really about the impending fall of the Roman Empire, and trying to scare the goys with their Jewish magic. Some actually believed that they were living in the end times, and the predicted return was supposed to be in their lifetime.

Most early Christians believed Christ's return was imminent. Look at the ferver in which they spread out to spread the Gospel. It's quite astonishing actually. In one generation it had penetrated (Rome, Greece, etc) most of the Roman Empire and made progress toward eastern expansion (Persia).
