Comcast Internet Modem Choice

Two part question....
These are the two options I have in my area for internet.
AT&T - 18Mps at $40/month (2 year pricing)
Comcast - 75Mps at $50/month (1 year pricing)
Question 1: I am assuming if I am having multiple items connected to WIFI as well as working toward implementing "smart home" items that 18Mps would not be enough to handle. Would this be correct?
Question 2: If I am going with the Comcast option, I would think it is a no brainer to purchase my own modem instead of paying the monthly fee (10$/mo). I currently have the ASUS RT-66U. What is my best option for a modem to bundle with my router?

i have an older model surfboard that has worked well. comcast keeps telling me it's "end of life," and it is no longer on their supported list. i don't think it supports the speeds i pay for, so i'll probably be upgrading to new surfboard soon.
