From what I have read Simmons now has a titanium rod in his left arm after the bone from his elbow to his shoulder was shattered. He will also require many more surgeries not to mention extensive physical therapy. I would imagine he may also need some counseling to deal with what has happened. It would not be surprising if he has PTSD.

So someone has to be there for him to drive him to those appointments and to be there to hear what the doctor says. He will need help doing a lot of things. He will likely be unable to help much around the house so now the wife has to do all of that. So working full-time right now may be difficult for her. That's just the physical aspect of his recovery.

As for his mental recovery, I think that having his wife there by his side is important to him and to his recovery. So I have no problem with her taking off work to devote her time to supporting her husband.
