It was pretty good for a B type movie. I was never "scared" at any time while viewing.

It's probably in my top 5 of horror movies. I thought it was absolutely excellent.

Different strokes, but I've seen more than my fair share of horror movies and this one stayed with me for days after watching it. Was even better the 2nd time around.

So have I. The horror genre is my favorite genre.
Which is why I'm so surprised you rank this movie in the top 5 let alone the top 100.
And I mean that! I'm truly surprised. But I agree with your "different strokes" comment.

I've seen a few people not like it because they couldn't understand the actors, and subtitles are an absolute must.
The soundtrack is probably some of the best horror music I've heard in quite a while. I had my surround sound kicking and it was beyond creepy and really set the tone of the entire movie.
The Witch was one part historical drama with a huge dose of historical horror. Those that claimed it was more of a "timepiece" movie and not a horror movie are well...wrong. It's a horror movie through and through that showcases the devil is very much real, but maybe fanatical Christianity is just as scary.
And Black Philip became a star that will be referenced as a horror movie great for many years. And when he spoke at the end? Holy shite. I got chills.

Curious, what are the other movies in your top 5 horror list?
Posted on 7/30/16 at 2:02 pm to mizzoukills
Just a few off the top of my head:
The Exorcist, Halloween, The Descent, Night of the Living Dead (1991), Amityville Horror
Jaws and Aliens if we are counting those as horror. Some do.
About to see Lights Out so I'd have think about how I would rank them.

my only thought is that everyone is trolling the absolute mess outta you....the movie was "unsettling" at best

I agree with you on all of these but the witch does not come close to any of those.

misleading title. how many witches were there, and how much screen time did they get?
Umm, there was 1 main witch that was responsible, hence "The Witch". And what does screen time have to do with the witch and its impact on the family?
after seeing the last scene with the coven, how can you be sure of that?
i just thought this movie was a classic example of a film that would have been better received if it had a different (possibly more vague) title. more of the movie was devoted to faith and liturgy than witchcraft.

I'm not sure how you arrived to that conclusion. Mind blown

I think you're the only one who puts that much stock into the title of a movie
Even tho I still don't know how you came to the conclusion that the witch or witchcraft wasn't a big part

i liked the movie. im just giving my reasoning for why so many didnt. the movie was just as much about religion as it was witchcraft, i dont think the haters were expecting that.
