Sallee comments on LSU Defensive emphasis and Craig

While this guy is obviously down on Miles and I don't agree with his W/L predictions, he does back up his rationale. There's the obligatory and obvious "Miles is stubborn" and "Harris is still unproven, but even if he's better Miles will limit him" (paraphrased) comments. But he made two interesting points I thought I'd put out there: (1) LSU overemphasizes defense to the point that it is out of touch with how games/championships are being won and (2) Dameyune Craig is a great recruiter but is not a good position coach...and sites lack of communication between receivers and QB at Auburn.
The article is click through which I know some hate, so I've copied these comments I thought were interesting

(1)
I'm not sure it will be dramatically improved, because a dramatic improvement is virtually impossible at LSU. I know Kevin Steele isn't well liked, but 347.2 YPG and an 0.58 TO margin should be enough defense in this day and age of CFB. I know the PPG and YPP isn't up to LSU standards, but that's exactly the problem—LSU standards haven't evolved with CFB the way that other schools have.
Just enough defense wins championships nowadays, and LSU's out-dated offensive philosophy mandates that LSU play elite D week-in and week-out. It's part of the reason (not all, but part) Chavis wanted out a few years ago, and is precisely what needs to change within the program
(2)
Because I don't think Craig is a good WR coach. He's a tremendous recruiter, which will undoubtedly pay dividends in February if the staff is still around. But if you watched Auburn play last year, that QB/WR communication was nonexistent and WR fundamentals cost them several games—including the 4OT loss to Arkansas which was one of ESPN's top 25 games that they've been showing.
Returning starting quarterbacks don't matter all that much in the grand scheme of things. Six of the last seven national titles were won by first-year starters and 10 of the last 14 starters in the national title game were first-year starters. It's more about the offensive philosophy at LSU, and I don't see that changing. LSU can't get into and win shootouts consistently, and you have to win games outside of your comfort zone in this day and age (see: Alabama beating Clemson playing Clemson football, beating A&M playing A&M football and beating Auburn playing Auburn football).

IDGAF what his rationale is, putting LSU at 5th in the West with this veteran studded team is outright retarded. He should get tested.

This is the kind of thoughtful response I was hoping for.

He is really starting to look and sound like a guy who has an agenda.
Posted on 7/27/16 at 9:53 am to bulldogger
Haven't we heard many times already about how he's teaching receivers what the quarterback is thinking and wants to see?

yea. I wonder how much money he'd put up on that 5th in the west thing. today's "journalists" are a joke. whores for hits.

There's no responding to it. LSU at 5th in the West is NOT happening. I'd at least give him 3rd, but 5th? LOL NO.

That's why I copied/pasted the comments, genius. Thanks for the insight. Now you can get back to that Elmer's glue you're eating.

Odd comments. The question isn't whether we have enough of defense. It is whether Aranda will produce better outcomes than Steele did.
Also, the question is whether Craig is better than Tony Ball. Our wide receivers concentration issues were pretty bad under Ball. I think Craig has room to improve that unit even if you don't think he is a "good WR coach."
A very weird take. The way to come at these answers looks more like trying to achieve a specific outcome than trying to offer illumination based on things as they are.

Well how good was Tony Ball last year? Would guess Craig is a coaching upgrade over Ball but I honestly don't know and am just speculating.

LSU is top 5 in wins over the last 10 years.
Sallee's points are never rational.

I don't believe his prediction but his logic is correct. If Miles doesn't change his outdated offensive philosophy then you get close to the same results. Until he shows he is willing to do that why expect him to. Harris has yet to show he can take over a game. And saying he doesn't need to is complete BS if you expect this team to win a SEC title.

I'm so tired of his narrative about our outdated coaching philosophies...
We can't improve on 347 a game? Or how about the 122 rushing yards per game? Or the fricking terrible pass defense we displayed? Or most importantly the scoring defense.....
That whole take is absurd.....we expect top 5 defensive results at LSU against run pass and scoring....
And I don't give a shite what he thinks of D Craig.....elite WRs don't need to communicate they need to run block and catch.....the Qb has to distribute the ball......

oh frick it, I'll play.
This is just a general blanket statement that does not take into account who you are playing. It's a Big12 mentality. How many championships have they won again? Having a elite defense is "out of touch" with CFB? That's just ignorant.
and Craig brought those players with him here? Is he really comparing AU WR and LSU WR? Plus Johnson was a complete dumpster fire last year. What a BS reason to use the lack of communication card.
Bama was up 14 or whatever with 10 seconds left. They won playing Alabama football, fricking moron.
and beating A&M and Auburn? wtf? Aggie has not beaten LSU yet and Aubie gets physically pushed around by LSU overall. I mean frick this guy is just a cheeseball click my link machine.
Unreal he makes money for this crapola, He clearly has some kind of agenda.

One of the reasons Craig left Auburn is because he didn't get to coach the WRs like he wanted.
And the key to good defenses is having the right players to fit your scheme. An area where Aranda will shine and one of the reasons Steele was hired but he wasn't great on the recruiting front either. Orgeron is doing a great job of getting the DL talent and depth back to where it needs to be.

Auburn 2010 was just good enough on defense. They are the exception not the rule.

How can you say win shootouts consistently then point out 3 instances over 3 years as an example. Yes you will need to win a shootout every now and then but not consistently. LSU's offensive style of grinding out the clock doesn't allow for the other team to get in the 40's consistently anyway.
