It sort of does when the monster comes through the ceiling into the Byers' house but I guess it is curious why the hole sealed so quickly afterward.
I was also curious why El making contact with the thing in that sort of psychic space allowed the gate to be opened. My impression was that the government wasn't intending to find this gate or place but they got greedy and obviously opened the portal somehow, just not sure how.
Wasn't sure, either, why the monster was able to just tear through dimensions without going through the main gate. Hell, the thing could smell blood across dimensions

Not sure about this but I was curious about the dark world or Vale of Shadows as they called it. I get that it is an alternate dimension but what was it? Obviously it has this monster living in it (and laying eggs and using people Alien-style to do it) but does that mean this thing was able to grab people elsewhere in the world?

This is how I interpret it. The government was doing experiments with this supernatural girl to use as a cold war weapon. They accidentally stumble upon this extra dimension in doing so. They order El to go back to investigate this out of excitement of making contact with extradimensional life. El touching the monster in this psychic plain forces the link between the two dimensions forcing open the gate between the two worlds and either giving the monster the ability to cross between the two at will or the monster already had the ability. It was just made aware of our dimension.
