It was mostly after that, really.
Late 90s and early 2000s.
I think people have to remember how these surveys are graded.
For example, if an owner can't figure out the user-interfaces or they are not intuitive, that is scored as a defect.
All "defects" are not equal.
Ford trucks get beat up b/c of Sync, yet the truck itself is very reliable.
You really have to dig into these things to get the real story.
Generally, too, a guy buying a Porsche (or any premium brand) isn't going to knock it in a survey, even if the car has issues. No one wants to admit they made a high-dollar mistake.
