There wasn't social media in the 60s. Been like this for a while you just see it more because of the Internet

I wonder what the mood was while this was going on in New Orleans in the early '70s. Anyone around at the time?

Bullfrickingshit. This is as weak an excuse as " everybody does it". The lack of respect for people, property, institutions, and the blatant disregard for morality and the law hasn't always been this rampant. You're glib response regarding social media is symptomatic of what's wrong and why so little of it seems to matter.

I agree. I think a lot of it is just sensationalism by the media.

Actually things are way better now than ever. But the media thrives on fear and division. Showing the good in the world doesn't sell papers or get eye balls or clicks/shares/likes/comments.

So basically the question posed by OP is based on a false premise
