Who the hell cares? Please name me one fictional war film that doesn't have at least one classic war movie trope in it.
Saving Private Ryan succeeds because it executes well on a technical and character level. John Miller is fully fleshed out and realized and is a hero you can root for. The visuals, the editing, the sound effects, and cinematography are all masterful. The story itself may be somewhat generic but you can say that for many films out there, war movie or not.
