I never knew about this. Wonder why they did away with it?

That's what SBNation is for now
Because a lot of national writers who were let go from their jobs are now using BR as a platform for their work.

Because the Internet has made it exceedingly difficult to make a living writing about sports.
They did you a favor, kid. Get a real job and write on the side.

There was a huge piece by Deadspin that was written by a former Bleacher report writer who said he worked for them for years and never saw a dollar. Essentially he said that they tell young beat writers to keep moving up the ranks with possibilities of becoming paid, but in the end there never was paid opportunities and it was a scam to just get free content essentially.
I work in the media and Bleacher Report is known to be shite.

I'm 25 and I'm a sports columnist and an editor. Don't listen to this idiot.

What do you need bleacher report for? Start making your own good content. Find a blog or somewhere you'd like your work to end up and network via social media.

Cover high school sports for a community newspaper?

If you are then that's either a terrible product or your posts here are largely trolls

I write David Alaba erotic fan fiction for a living.

Everyone I know around my age (26) who is a sportswriter or editor is stuck in some hodunk town covering girl's high school volleyball and the like. That includes a guy who spent 200K on a Northwestern journalism degree.

No sir. I did do part time high school work when I was still in college though.
I mainly do recruiting and college sports now.

Lol I'll be the first to admit, I am not a very good writer, but I do stir the pot
Shockingly enough, those are the people who end up getting paid. Bayless, Rome, guys with ridiculous hot takes.

So I wanted to be a sportwriter when I got to LSU. After a year or so, I realized how fruitless that road would be and went another direction.
Anyway, one of my Journalism professors said he got an email from a guy starting a sports site looking for "interns." Basically, he was sending emails to every journalism professor at a major university to try and trick them into getting students to write for his bullshite site under the guise of an "internship." The dude was a college dropout who was a waiter and tried to pull this scam to pocket the ad revenue. Didn't last very long.
But yea, BR probably was doing the same thing.

Yeah, the guy who wrote the Deadspin piece said he just kept at it because they kept giving him credentials for Twins games amd he thought one day he's get a paid position, didn't pan out.
A lot of companies do that now with 'interns'

This seems like the perfect thread to tell random stories about my sportswriting ambitions in my younger days.
Back in high school, I used to be obsessed with the CBSSports NBA message board. I used to post on there constantly. Their NBA writer, Tony Mejia (now with Vegas Insider I believe), ended up leaving and they were looking for an NBA writer. Anyway, some fellow posters started a campaign to get CBS to hire me as their NBA writer. They ended up hiring Ken Berger, who had 14 years of sportswriting experience or something.
Anyway, moral of the story: In today's journalism world, no reader gives two shits about your credentials and any loser with a blog can do your job just as well, if not better than you.
