IMHO, if you live with a person, accumulate wealth together and start family together then you have married that person. The actual wedding and filing the legal documents is a way that most choose to declare it but even those who never formally declare it have chosen the married life. Seriously, long before we developed these societal norms related to marriage there were couples choosing to be monogamous for life.
