I think it was just an over exaggerated coaching technique used to make him stop doing something, like fumbling around with the ball. He probably practiced it so much that it became a part of his routine.
Its kind of like a leg kick. Some pitchers have higher leg kicks to force them to put all of their weight on their back foot so that they can get a maximum push off the rubber.
Try to explain pitcher Jon Gant's pitch though. Holy shite
