I mean it has always been a big part of his game, but he goes into frustration spurts where he stubbornly wants to shoot jumpers instead of playing in the post and/or driving to the basket. That game is a little boring sometimes, but he is so effective when he is playing that way because defenses collapse and his passing has been on point lately. When the ball gets stuck Cleveland can get caught in a grind and they're ineffective. When LeBron is driving, he tends to kick it out to guys on the perimeter and they'll swing it a few times until someone has an open 3 or an open lane to drive and dunk. LeBron driving is good for LeBron and GREAT for Cleveland, at least IMO>

A lot of it may be a function of his improved endurance and simply being in better shape. He's never been in bad shape by any means but stamina is a big factor in settling for lazy jumpers and poor defense. James Harden is a prime example on the extreme end of this spectrum.
